How much does a marketing agency cost in the UK?

By Jack Gedroge ·

The short answer: most small UK businesses pay somewhere between £300 and £2,000 a month for a marketing agency, or a few hundred to a few thousand pounds for a one-off job like a website. Freelancers usually charge roughly £25 to £75 an hour. Small agencies usually start at around £500 a month, and bigger agencies at £2,000 to £5,000 a month or more. Advertising spend is nearly always on top.

The spread is wide because "marketing agency" covers everything from one person doing your socials to a team of twenty running national campaigns. Here's how the options compare, and how to work out which you need.

Option Typical UK cost Best for
A freelancer £25 to £75 an hour, often £250 to £1,000 a month One or two jobs, done by one person who knows your business
A small agency £500 to £2,000 a month Most small firms: more capacity, and you still deal with the people doing the work
A larger agency £2,000 to £5,000 a month or more Bigger budgets that need several specialists

How do marketing agencies charge?

  • A monthly retainer. A fixed amount each month for an agreed list of work: posts, ads, a monthly report. The most common way for ongoing work like social media and search.
  • A project price. One fixed price for one job with an end: a website, a logo, a brochure. You know the cost before you start.
  • By the hour or day. Common with freelancers. Fine for small jobs, harder to budget for ongoing work.

Watch for a fourth one: a percentage of ad spend, usually 10 to 20 percent, for running your Google or Facebook adverts. The ads themselves are paid to Google or Meta on top.

How much does a freelance marketer cost?

A freelance marketer usually charges roughly £25 to £75 an hour, or £250 to £500 a day. On a monthly basis that often works out at £250 to £1,000 for a small business.

You get one person who knows your business well, and no account manager in the middle. Check what happens when they're on holiday or ill, and whether they do everything themselves or hand parts of it to others.

How much does a small marketing agency cost?

A small, local agency usually charges roughly £500 to £2,000 a month for a small business. For that you'd typically get one or two services, say social media plus a website looked after, with a monthly report.

This is the sweet spot for most small firms: more capacity than a freelancer, and you still deal with the people doing the work.

How much does a large marketing agency cost?

Bigger agencies usually start at £2,000 to £5,000 a month, and the biggest at £10,000 or more. Many ask for a minimum contract, from three months up to a year.

You get specialists for each job, more polish and more process. For a business turning over under a million pounds a year, it's usually more than you need.

What do one-off marketing jobs cost?

Rough UK figures for the jobs most small businesses ask for:

  • A small business website: from a few hundred pounds with a freelancer to £2,000 or more with an agency. Our guide to how much a small business website costs goes into the detail.
  • A logo and basic brand: roughly £300 to £3,000.
  • Managing your Google or Facebook ads: roughly £300 to £1,500 a month, plus the ad spend.
  • Social media management: roughly £250 to £2,000 a month. Our guide to what social media management costs compares the options.
  • A content shoot: roughly £150 to £900 for a batch of photos and short videos, depending on how much video.

Sources: Bark's prices for logos, ad management, photographers and videographers, and Whito for ad management fees, including the 10 to 20 percent of ad spend. Prices checked October 2026.

What changes the price?

  • How many services. Social media alone costs less than social media, a website, ads and email together.
  • How much content. Video takes the most time to plan, film and edit.
  • Ad spend. Management fees often rise with the budget being managed.
  • Who does the work. A senior person costs more an hour than a junior, but often needs fewer hours.
  • Contract length. A longer commitment usually means a lower monthly price.
  • Reporting and meetings. Weekly calls cost more than a monthly email.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. What exactly do I get each month? Ask for it in writing, as a list.
  2. Who will actually do the work? The person pitching isn't always the person posting.
  3. What's the minimum term, and how much notice do I need to give?
  4. Who owns what? Your website, your accounts, your photos and your ad account should all be in your name.
  5. How will you show me it's working? Ask for enquiries and sales, not just likes and reach.
  6. What's not included? Ad spend, photography, printing and stock photos are often extra.

Do you need an agency at all?

Not always. If you're just starting out, one well-made website and a Google Business Profile that's kept up to date will do more than a retainer you can't afford yet. Add the ongoing work once the basics are in place and you know what you want it to bring in.
